ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF THE KUMON METHOD

The Kumon method started from a father’s love. Our late founder, Mr. Toru Kumon, was a high school mathematics teacher from Osaka, Japan. Keen to help his 8-year-old son Takeshi do better at school, Mr. Kumon developed the materials and guiding principles that form the heart of the Kumon method of learning, used worldwide in over 45 countries and regions as per March 2007.

1954

Mr. Kumon was convinced that Takeshi could solve the kind of problems being taught at high school if he was taught the necessary skills to understand advanced-level mathematics by himself. He began designing worksheets to help Takeshi master key topics one step at a time.

1958

By primary 6, Takeshi had mastered integral and differential calculus by spending only 30 minutes a day on his father's worksheets. The mathematical problems created by Mr. Kumon were eventually organised into the curriculum that we still use today.

Today, our activities are still guided by the kind of parental love and devotion that Mr. Kumon demonstrated in helping his son progress at school while building up life skills for the future.

Mr. Kumon’s belief that every child possesses untapped abilities and the potential to excel remains central to our corporate philosophy.
